The archive holds what happened in 1975. You hold what happened after. The Living Thread is the contribution instrument that collects the second half of a record that has been incomplete for fifty years.
This is not a survey. It is not a database. It is an invitation. You share only what you choose. Every domain has its own consent level. You can contribute to the archive without your name attached. A Love Ethic Archive Practice practitioner is present for every in-person contribution session.
What this is
The Operation Babylift Collection holds the departure end of your story — nursery names, departure dates, flight manifests, provincial origins, military context. What it does not hold is who you became. What your body carried. What your search found or did not find. What you want the next generation to know.
Those facts are only in you. The Living Thread is designed to receive them — through seven domains, each with its own consent level, none of them mandatory. You can complete one domain and stop. You can come back. You can change what you shared. The record you contribute will be held under Love Ethic Archive Practice, the same ethical framework that governs the entire archive.
Anyone who is a Child of War — born in Vietnam and evacuated through any of the seven streams, or first generation born to Vietnamese refugees across any of the 14 receiving countries. You do not need an Operation Babylift Collection record to contribute. You need a story that belongs to this history.
Your contribution feeds StoryPoint — the evidence layer that connects the archive to the living community. Together, all contributions will form the first dataset ever assembled across all seven streams of the Children of War. The placeholder data gets replaced by actual numbers from people who lived them.

This domain connects your self-knowledge to the Operation Babylift Collection registry. A match here can open the departure end of your record — nursery name, province, departure date, flight. It is the most powerful domain for research and the most personal. Share only what feels right.
This is the most sensitive domain and the most medically significant. No institution has collected population-level body history from this cohort. C-5A survivor somatic profiles. Autoimmune patterns. ACE score correlations. The second generation's missing medical history. Share only what you are comfortable sharing.
Variable V12 — Receiving Environment. No population-level data exists on how transracial placement in 1975 predicts adult outcomes. Did your receiving family have existing Vietnamese community ties? Was there cultural mirroring? What are the 50-year outcomes? This domain begins to answer that question.
Variable V23 — intergenerational politics. Does political identity match or diverge from the adoptive family's? Are Children of War the "good refugees" the narrative predicted? This domain makes that question answerable for the first time at population scale.
NCFA has national adoption search statistics. This will be the first dataset specific to this cohort, this history, this orphanage system. What percentage searched? What did they find? What did the reunion cost and give back? This domain answers those questions — but only if you are ready to be here.
Reflection Card R10: The Thing No One Asked You. This domain is the least structured and the most important. It is the space for the thing you have carried that no form, no researcher, no journalist, no well-meaning question has ever made room for.
This is the final domain. It holds your decisions about how your contribution lives forward. Each is a separate choice. None are required. You can change any of them at any time.
Receive your receipt
Within 24 hours of submission you will receive a plain-language receipt of what you shared and what consent levels you chose. You can update your choices at any time by replying to that email. Your contact information is never shared with anyone and is held separately from your contribution data.
There is no right amount to share. Whatever you have given is enough. You can return to any domain at any time and add, change, or withdraw what you shared.
